Single Handed Care

Carers across the UK

  • There are around 7 million carers in the UK – that is one in ten people
  • 3 in 5 people will be carers at some point in their lives in the UK.
  • Out of the UK’s carers, 42% of carers are men and 58% are women.

What is “Single Handed Care”?

For many years, it’s been established standard practice for people who need to be hoisted or cared for in bed to have a double staffed care package.

With local authorities experiencing budget and staff cuts, difficult decisions are being made on the viability of established methods of delivering care. As part of an effort to improve efficiencies, health authorities and care teams are adopting the Single-Handed Care model, in which clients can receive the same or improved standards of care – including moving, handling and bathing – from just one person, without sacrificing safety for either party.

Reviews reveal that over 40% of people currently receiving care from two or more carers could be benefiting from Single Handed Care packages

Why is single handed care necessary?

  • The introduction of single handed care is undoubtedly going to be required in order to meet the demands placed on health and social care services in the future
  • Service users who have a single carer often report they have more independence, choice and control, a better relationship with their carer, and that they feel they have more dignity and privacy
  • Double staffed care packages are expensive, difficult to rota, and can therefore take a long time to arrange, and often leave few choices to the service user about their care.
  • We need to free up capacity in our care services – every care package that can safely be provided by one person means another carer is available to care for someone else
  • For many service users, it also means being “handled” less, better comfort and positioning when sitting in their chair or wheelchair, and less danger of damage to their skin, for example when hoist slings are fitted and removed
  • For many people, it will mean they can have the choice to be cared for a by a relative for longer, and to do so safely

What are the benefits of Single Handed Care?

Single handed care will only be implemented when it is safe and appropriate to do so. Experience around the UK has shown that single handed care can be successfully delivered in between 25-48 % of cases who would ordinarily need a double handed care package.

There are a number of benefits for both the client and the care teams.

Care reviews have found that many clients felt their privacy was being compromised by having two carers, who may not be the same every day. Single-Handed Care allows increased privacy and dignity for clients, as well as increased independence and flexibility.

Single Handed Care has immediate positive impact and cost savings for care teams, providers and local authorities. Single Handed Care allows the same number of cares to provide care for a greater number of clients, immediately reducing the time constraints and pressures currently experienced.
